Infectious Diseases Update 2009

Dates11/7/2009
LocationFawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH
DescriptionThis program will provide a practical update on the diagnosis, management, prevention and control of infectious diseases for practicing physicians, nurse practitioners and infection control practitioners in the community. This will be accomplished through a series of lectures provided by members of the Infectious Diseases Faculty of The Ohio State University College of Medicine. These lectures will include the most current scientific and clinical information available on the specified topics. Infectious diseases and the microbes that cause them are constantly changing. Physicians and other health care providers have an ongoing need to remain aware the evolution of infectious diseases in the community and the world at large in order to provide effective treatments and preventive strategies for their patients. This is the nature of infectious diseases and is well known to our expert faculty and we have learned of interest and needs in this area from evaluations of our previous CME programs. The non-human H1N1 influenza pandemic is an illustrative example of the need for this program. This pandemic is evolving on an almost daily basis and this information needs to be rapidly disseminated to both practicing physicians and those involved in infection control and public health. Similarly, new antibiotics and antifungal agents continue to be developed and released for use. All levels of practitioners need to be familiar with the use, indications and potential toxicities of these new anti-infective drugs. These and other actively evolving issues in infectious diseases will be discussed at this conference. The expert faculty of The Ohio State University Medical Center’s Division of Infectious CME Planning committee chooses the topics based on the above criteria and speakers were chosen from this faculty group. Doctors, Schlesinger, Mangino, Maher, Davis, Wang, Koletar and Martin are all experts in the areas of which they will be speaking. Patients and residents of our community are the ultimate beneficiaries of this program. Information gained by attendees, practicing primary care physicians, hospitalists as well as other physicians, nurses and infection control personnel can be immediately integrated into their practice or utilized in public health planning and control strategies. The topics and presentations were designed to improve patient outcomes and decrease burden of disease in the community.
