Purpose

The Center for Continuing Medical Education (CCME) at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUMC) is dedicated, through a rich and innovative tradition, to providing high quality continuing medical education to physicians and other healthcare professionals in order to facilitate the delivery of better and enhanced patient care and outcomes. Pursuant to the Medical Center’s goal of disseminating and applying new knowledge, CCME employs the latest advances in evidence-based medicine to altar practice performance.

Target Audience

As part of a preeminent academic institution whose mission includes creating a positive impact locally and internationally, CCME serves the educational demands of an array of healthcare professionals in many specialties. The Center’s target audience includes physicians, researchers, and other healthcare professionals affiliated with OSUMC. Community practitioners at the local and regional level are also encouraged to participate in CCME organized events. Additionally, via educational partnerships, internet-based learning, and direct sponsorship, CCME reaches a national and international audience.

Types of Activities Provided

The Center continually implements new technologies and educational assays to assist individuals in their professional development, meeting the various educational needs of a diverse healthcare professional population. CCME coordinated activities include:

  • Local, regional, national and international symposia
  • Internet-based enduring materials, including video on demand programming and monograph/journal review
  • Regularly Scheduled Series, or grand rounds

Content

The Center determines educational deficiencies by utilizing several needs assessment sources, including journal articles or other peer reviewed sources, clinical evidence and research, audience survey instruments, and discussion with clinical and research faculty. Upon identification of educational needs, programming is produced in a multitude of medical specialties and subjects, incorporating clinical best practices and evidence-based guidelines. In the diffusion of medical education, CCME applies many learning mechanisms such as case reviews, audience question and answer, panel discussions, and multi-media presentations.

Expected Results

The Center expects to achieve results in several areas. Expanded participant knowledge that addresses identified educational gaps and attendee’s expectation that knowledge obtained will be utilized in clinical practice are immediately measured outcomes. Long term measurable results include participant change in performance, increased self-perceived effectiveness in the clinical setting, and improved patient outcomes.
