Description
The American College of Physicians has identified 5 GI topics that can be isolated for cost saving measures. The target audience lacks general GI knowledge of subspecialty diseases shown below, that will be reviewed at the 3rd Annual Management of High Value Care GI Disorders for the Primary Care Provider Conference.
Attendees will gain a better understanding of various cost-effective strategies and guidelines for managing these conditions, with the goal of minimizing wasted spending on misdirected or inadequate workup and management protocols.
1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease: we will address updates in the management of sequelae of GERD, including Barrett’s esophagus. There will also be data presented on the new studies addressing the risks of PPI therapy, including kidney disease, dementia, and bone disease.
2. Diarrhea - the year, the areas of diarrhea that we will focus on will include celiac disease and new treatment strategies for C diff colitis. Will also have our dietician speak on specific diet strategies for IBS.
3. Rectal bleeding - Will be addressing updates in the use of capsule endoscopy for workup of occult GI bleeding
4. Abdominal pain: different that other years, this year we will be specifically addressing abdominal pain as it relates to chronic constipation and chronic pancreatitis. there are multiple new medications for chronic constipation that for which educating the PCP is needed. Also, there are complex issues related to management of the chronic pancreatitis patient that the PCP will need to understand.
5. Abnormal LFT and basic initial workup and management of liver disease: this year we will specifically focus on the having the primary care provider understand the basics of the newest strategies for addressing fatty liver disease, understanding the basics of addressing new liver lesions seen on a CT or MRI or ultrasound, and understand the basics of working up viral hepatitis.
The conference will be a live activity that will consist of power point presentation and lecture format. In addition, the agenda is structured with panel discussion that provides attendees an opportunity to engage in questions and answer dialogue and solicited participation in the learning process.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this live activity, learners should be able to:
1. Recall the new recommendations for care and management of Barrett’s esophagus
2. Understand the early workup and management of liver lesions identified on ultrasound and scans
3. Recognize the potential pitfalls of long-term PPI use and better understand the risk/benefit balance in their use
4. Identify the newest options for management of chronic constipation
5. Explain the role of capsule endoscopy and the proper situation in which it should be ordered
6. List updates in the workup and care of diarrhea secondary to celiac disease, C difficile colitis and IBS
7. Explain initial workup and management of patients with viral hepatitis and steatohepatitis
8. Recognize the health care implications for the upcoming congressional and presidential elections
9. Identify basics of management of the chronic pancreatitis patient
