Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

1.  Apply the indications for the initiation and maintenance of antiresorptive therapy for postmenopausal osteoporosis and recall new therapies available to treat osteoporosis.

2.  Recognize the impetus and science behind the formation of a Fracture Liaison Service and how this
service might benefit the clinical care of patients in various health care systems.

3.  Identify the radiologic aspects of common musculoskeletal bone disease and collaborate with radiologic colleagues to provide better care for patients who present with bony abnormalities.

4.  Employ the current evidence-based understanding regarding the role of nutrition in
improving bone health, including supplemental calcium, vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin K and functional foods.

5.  Define the role physical therapy plays in the treatment of patients with osteoporosis and other
metabolic bone disease, and select specific interventions that can be incorporated into the daily care of these patients to reduce fracture risk.

6.  Identify, evaluate and manage hyperparathyroidism with increased comfort and competence.

7.  Assess the unique syndrome of hypophosphatasia and explain the role the newest agents available for the care of patients can play with this condition.

8.  Identify common and rare side effects of the most commonly prescribed medications for metabolic
bone disease, and employ the newest guidelines on how to avoid those side effects and/or treat patient when issues occur.

9.  Utilize the surgeon's perspective of the presentation of hip fractures, including atypical femoral fractures, to improve how the learner administer the acute care of a patient with hip fracture, as well as the sequelae.
