Description
Disparities in health care are complex and multifactorial. There are various patient and health system factors that contribute to disparities in the colorectal cancer care continuum (from
prevention to survivorship). At the patient level, cultural beliefs and distrust of the medical system present significant barriers. There are also socioeconomic factors that limit access to quality care and make understanding medical diagnoses such as cancer and the importance of screening, diagnosis, and treatment of such conditions challenging. At the health care provider level and system level, barriers include lack of physician recommendation for screening and systems that rely on patients having insurance and/or a usual source of care to receive cancer screening education and tests. More importantly, the literature clearly shows that when these vulnerable groups are diagnosed with cancer, they are less likely to be treated and/or enrolled in clinical trials. Therefore, there exists a dire need for education-based outreach programs aimed at engaging both community members and health care providers regarding colorectal cancer
prevention and care.
This continuing medical education activity is a multidisciplinary, interactive, and educational event targeting health care providers, researchers, community health workers, health educators, community organization leadership, and public health, medical, and other health professions students across the state of Ohio. The format will be that of lectures and panel discussions. This conference will provide best practices for reducing cancer health disparities in community health settings through discussion of a) geographical and socioeconomic considerations in eliminating cancer disparities, b) challenges opportunities and best practices in engaging the LGBTQ community and other minority groups in cancer prevention, care, and clinical trials, c) policy changes that we can expect under the new Presidential administration that can impact cancer prevention and care d) the roles of religion and genetic testing in addressing cancer disparities, and e) strategies for achieving equity in the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer.
This event will lead to improvement in the following metrics:
1. Knowledge of cancer disparities and best practices in reducing cancer disparities.
2. Health care provider performance (whether the learner has made a change to their
practice or implemented new strategies as a result of the conference).
3. Patient outcomes (a qualitative assessment of compliance with cancer screening and
referral for cancer treatment and/or clinical trial enrollment).
