Description

The Course Directors came together, with a shared passion of expanding Sexual Health education and
knowledge within the state of Ohio and for healthcare providers in particular. We utilized data from the Prevalence of Female Sexual Problems Associated with Distress and Determinants of Treatment Seeking (PRESIDE) study and others to direct us toward identifying a knowledge gap among non-sexual health expert healthcare providers particularly OB/GYNs and primary care providers. According
to the PRESIDE study, in the US, 44.2% of the women in this study reported any of the three sexual problems- desire, arousal or orgasm. Of the women with one or more self-reported sexual problem, only 1 in 5 had ever discussed their sexual concerns with a healthcare provider. Furthermore, women who were distressed by their problem were more likely to seek formal healthcare however, only a third of them had actually ever sought care. “Of these women, in 8 of 10, the woman rather than the provider initiated the first discussion about sexual health, which most often occurred during a routine physical examination or visit for another medical condition” with the gynecologist or primary care
provider being the most commonly accessed (Shifren, 2009).

Our goal for this event is to provide a women’s Sexual Health educational forum for healthcare providers utilizing current, evidenced-based medicine in an effort to increase awareness of the impact of sexual health conditions so practitioners may improve the lives of their patients.
