Today on MedNet21, we're going to discuss Pharmacologic Management of Pain.

Our presenter hopes to walk the audience through “how we got here” meaning the pendulum swing from prescribing no narcotics for pain (prior to 1990), to over prescribing narcotics (2000’s), to now trying to limit prescribing narcotics (2013-present). She plans to review quick validated
screening tools  (1-2 minutes) that would give prescribers a general idea of patient’s pain and whether or not it is controlled (if indeed there is a reason for pain). I have a patient case and
several slides devoted to medication drug classes including mechanisms of action, types of pain the medications will help with most, side effects, and cost information. Lastly, Lisa will to highlight the opioid epidemic especially as it pertains to Ohio, the rise of heroin, OARRS reporting, the Governor’s Action Plan, and how to have “the talk” with patients that may exhibit drug seeking
