As a result of this educational activity, webcast participants will be able to: IDENTIFY the most common causes of chronic cough and recognize associated signs/symptoms; APPLY an appropriate diagnostic and treatment algorithm to patients with chronic cough; DESCRIBE the general mechanism of the cough reflex; and UNDERSTAND the distinction between acute, sub-acute, and chronic cough.

You’ll also learn about the following:

  • Role of the chest x-ray in evaluation of cough
  • Opioid cough suppressants
  • Cough suppression therapies

Today on MedNet21, we're going to discuss Approach to Cough.

Part 1 of the presentation will focus on a review of the basics of the cough reflex, the differentiation of cough based upon symptom duration, and logical medical approach to patient presenting with cough. In conclusion, we review the acute cough differential diagnosis and literature regarding treatment for acute cough. We will discuss the most common causes of chronic cough and how to treat chronic cough depending on its etiology. We will also discuss when it is appropriate to refer to a specialist as well as other therapies that can be used for cough suppression.
