Objective(s)
As a result of this educational activity, webcast participants will be able to: UNDERSTAND Medical Management; GAIN an understanding of a gluten free diet: grains omitted, grains included and problems with contamination; DESCRIBE the various clinical manifestations of celiac disease, including the non-intestinal symptoms; and DESCRIBE the diagnostic findings of celiac disease, specifically the antibody studies, genetic testing and endoscopic features. You’ll also learn about the following: - Signs and symptoms of celiac disease
- Gluten-free myths
- Being gluten-free when eating out at restaurants
- Celiac serology selection
- Screening high-risk patients
- Cost of being gluten-free
- Whether meat from grain-fed beef and poultry is safe
Description
Today on MedNet21, we're going to discuss Celiac Disease.
Learners will be educated on the challenges of a gluten free diet and promoting patient compliance. Learners will gain a basic understanding of food labeling laws and how that impacts gluten free labeling. The role of the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist in the care and management of a patient with Celiac Disease is described. The learners will hear about the clinical manifestations of celiac disease and the best diagnostic strategies. We will discuss the difference between non-celiac gluten sensitivity and celiac disease. The learners will hear some ‘tips’ for diagnosing or disproving celiac disease in patients who have already initiated a gluten free diet. Key management tips will be presented – in particular, the important caveats of a gluten free diet. We will discuss common diet pitfalls, misconceptions and controversies that surround a gluten free diet.
