Description

Ohio BWC has sponsored the Ohio Safety Congress & Expo – the largest and longest running occupational safety, health, and workers’ compensation conference in Ohio for many years.  This event is designed to educate healthcare professionals on the quality of care management of Ohio’s injured workers relative to the latest trends with research, best practices among healthcare
providers, and management of injured workers in a comprehensive and holistic approach.  This symposium features leading national and state experts within their respective fields.  T

Due to the amount of neuromusculoskeletal injuries our providers evaluate/treat and media attention to mild brain injury, presenters will discuss injuries to the shoulder, concussion, and functional status as it relates to recovery and dealing with the impacts it has among our injured workers. The provider
will recognize innovative ways to approach injured workers who have some designated disability and the causal relationship between those injuries and how it relates to functionality.

In addition presenters will discuss the latest trends in research relative to addiction and evidence based intervention strategies that identify signs, symptoms, and risk factors relative to managing the disease of addiction, especially related to opioids.  Also, there is growing interest among
population health management, health and behavioral assessment intervention strategies, and understanding diversity trends in healthcare.

As population health management grows, studies have shown that “workplace wellness has the potential to deliver quantifiable benefits by creating a thriving, engaged, and productive workplace”
Furthermore, our committee sought out individuals to speaker will address the impact injuries have on injured workers and to understand the challenges it places on their post-injury function and well-being.  This topic will share concepts that the provider can take back with them regarding how to better deal with this select population as they cope with adapting with a new way of life and what role the provider can play to assist in the transition process.

Finally, as the State of Ohio continues its battle with opioids, speakers will discuss the impacts of medication among injured workers and well as addressing best practices when it comes to
effective discontinuation and/or tapering of elevated risk medications. Early indicators suggest that clinicians must find “… the best possible equilibrium for each patient balancing the risks and benefits of opioids in way that optimizes function, and establish realistic taper or maintenance goals
accordingly.”
