The 2nd Annual Symposium for the treatment of the Endurance Athlete will focus on evidence based approach for the medical professional working with endurance athletes. This year’s symposium will focus on the running athlete and athletes with disabilities, but many of the areas that will be covered can be applied to most athletes and active individuals.
The areas to be covered include: medical management, surgical management, rehabilitation, psychological management, nutritional management, and hands on demonstration of
prosthetic/wheelchair fitting and running gait analysis.
The symposium will be didactic in nature, with scheduled time for question and answer and interactive case study presentations. Our guest speaker will be Aaron Baggish, MD, who is a cardiologist in Boston, Massachusetts and is affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital. He has been in practice for 12 years. His on-going research focuses on heart function and heart disease in athletic individuals. He is the Associate Director of the Cardiovascular Performance Program, a Massachusetts General Hospital Heart Center program that provides clinical care and
exercise testing for active individuals. Dr. Baggish serves as the cardiologist for the Boston Marathon.

Objectives
- Understand the injuries and conditions that commonly affect athletes participating in endurance sports
- Suggest appropriate treatment strategies for the common injuries and conditions that occur in endurance athletes
- Suggest an appropriate differential diagnosis and workup for leg pain in the running athlete
- Enact the appropriate strategies for ensuring safety and comfort of endurance athletes with disabilities
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of altitude-related illness in endurance sports
- Appropriately discuss the risks and benefits of participation in running and endurance sports during pregnancy
- Recognize risk factors and employ strategies to prevent heart-related events during participation in endurance sports
- Delineate high risk bony injuries from low risk injuries and employ the appropriate treatment for each group
- Understand the basic points and clinical information that can be gleaned from running gait analysis, bike fitting, and swim stroke analysis
