recognition and appropriate management. When a critical event occurs, the timely and correct response by the physician can make the difference between life and death for the patient.
Simulation provides a means to re-create unusual, atypical, or rare events in order for physicians and healthcare teams to gain practice in recognizing and responding to these circumstances. Debriefing provides an additional learning opportunity, as participants discuss the interpretation, decision making, actions and teamwork. Finally, practitioner performance can be objectively assessed during standardized simulated activities. For all of these reasons, simulation training in Anesthesiology provides an important practice improvement and assessment tool.
The format of this course will be a live, participatory event. The educational design of the activity will be simulated case scenarios followed by a small group debriefing exercise. Learners will be given a clinical scenario in the virtual OR, using the high fidelity manikin. Participants wil respond to critical events individually and as teams (with all participants having a chance to rotate through the "hot seat"). Following the scenarios, structured debriefing will be led by facutly experts. The benefit of this format is that it will meet adult learning principles and will mirror the MOCA simulation course
requirements. The course will allow evaluation of performance in a simulated practice situation. They course will simultaneously provide a good learning experience for the the faculty participants.
The activity is designed to improve knowledge about approaches to a difficult airway, to improve technical competence and to improve the interpersonal communication and team performance in order to achieve the best patient outcome.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:1. Effectively manage a critical event as a “hot-seat” participant in which a patient experiences an unexpected critical hemodynamic event.
2. Appropriately manage a significant case of hypoxemia, hypotension, ACLS, or difficult airway.
3. Demonstrate effective communication during a medical crisis situation and provide self-reflection on performance during group debriefing.
4. Demonstrate effective team leadership and utilize resources effectively during a crisis management scenario.
5. Describe ways in which simulation can be used as an effective learning tool to generate a practice improvement plan at his/her home institution.
