Description

Millions of musculoskeltal-related injuries and pain-related complains are seen in U.S. emergency rooms each year.  These numbers have been on the rise over the past 10 years.  Data compiled from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons from a 2006 survey done by The National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and The National Center for Health Statistics support this claim (

The initial and continuing management of these patients has far reaching personal and economic consequences for patients, families, and communities.  As such, orthopedics is divided into subspecialties that focus on specific musculoskeletal anatomic regions or diseases.  It is important that practicing orthopaedists and residents keep abreast of scientific studies a new advancements in each subspecialty area. Journal club serves to

 •         teach orthopaedists to locate, appraise, and assimilate evidence from scientific studies and apply it to their patient’s health problems.

 •         Reinforce the current knowledge of these subspecialty-related treatments so as to effectively treat orthopaedic injuries and disorders within a patient.

 •         Strengthen the physician’s knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of the various orthopaedic disorders encountered in each orthopaedic sub-specialty.  Thus, resulting in improved patient care, patient outcomes, and rates of morbidity.

 •         Review and discuss new research and treatment modalities
