Description

Individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection can develop symptoms that persist well beyond the acute phase of COVID-19 or emerge after the acute phase, lasting for weeks or months after the initial acute illness. The post-acute sequelae of COVID-19, which include physical, cognitive, and mental health impairments, are known collectively as long COVID or post-COVID-19 condition. The substantial burden of this multisystem condition is felt at individual, health-care system, and socioeconomic levels, on an unprecedented scale.

Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 is the subject of this week’s East Hospital Grand Rounds. Aaron Friedberg, MD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Erin McConnell, MD, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, and Andrew Schamess, MD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, are the expert panelist in this MedNet 21 webcast moderated by Shengyi Mao, MD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, and Medical Editor of MedNet 21. This presentation will be available as an in-person presentation in Wallace Auditorium beginning at 12:00 noon, May 3. Box lunches or lunch vouchers will be available to participants on a first-come basis.

Objectives

As a result of this continuing medical educational activity, participants will be able to

1. Recognize Long COVID based on WHO definition and recognition of common symptom clusters
2. Discuss the importance of explaining the diagnosis to patients, and providing validation.
3. Describe some interventions that can be helpful for treating neurologic symptoms in Long COVID patients.
4. Recognize symptoms of dysautonomia / POTS.
5. Recommend lifestyle modifications in patients with POTS / orthostatic intolerance.
I6. Identify potential physiologic mechanisms for dyspnea and fatigue in Post-COVID patients.
7. Discuss rehabilitation strategies that can be useful for management of post-COVID dyspnea and fatigue.
