Description
There is a clear and well-documented gap between what healthcare professionals currently practice in terms of addressing burnout and workforce wellbeing and what is achievable based on current evidence. While effective interventions—such as workflow redesign, team-based care, and resilience training—have been shown to reduce burnout and improve care quality, many clinicians and teams lack the competence and performance to implement these strategies effectively.
To close the identified professional practice gap, learners need both knowledge-based (competence) and skills-based (performance) education. Specifically, they require:
- A deeper understanding of the drivers of clinician burnout, including organizational, workflow, and cultural contributors.
- Familiarity with evidence-based interventions to enhance personal and team resilience.
- Skills to apply and lead wellbeing strategies within their teams and institutions.
These needs reflect a lack of training in systems-based approaches to wellbeing and leadership, not just personal coping. Addressing these educational needs will equip learners to implement sustainable change and improve both workforce and patient outcomes.
