Description
This module provides practical, foundational information about developing and conducting Team-Based Learning (TBL) sessions with large classes. The module covers the advantages of TBL, describes the components, discusses how the procedures have evolved in conducting sessions in the OSU College Of Medicine, and gives specific TBL pointers in our medical school curriculum. Video of a TBL session from the Cardiology Block is included to demonstrate the procedures and a student and faculty interchange.

Speaker
Mary Beth Fontana, MD, is a retired faculty emeritus of cardiovascular medicine at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Dr. Fontana was named one of “America’s Best Doctors” in 2009. She has been recognized for her teaching excellence by receiving an “Outstanding Teaching Award” from Ohio State’s College of Medicine more than 20 times. Dr. Fontana also has received the Charles F. Wooley, MD, Transmission of Excellence Teaching Award; the Distinguished Educator Award and the Alumni Achievement Award from Ohio State’s College of Medicine.
Dr. Fontana earned her medical degree and also completed her residency and a fellowship in cardiology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Her clinical interests include valvular and congenital heart disease, and she has published numerous articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Fontana is currently the Harry C. and Mary Elizabeth Powelson Professor of Medicine devoted to medical student tutoring and mentoring.

Objectives
As a result of this educational activity, webcast participants will be able to:1. Describe the small-group based instructional format, Team-Based Learning (TBL). 2. Define the rationale for and advantages of using TBL to replace passive lectures.
3. Describe the components of designing and conducting TBL to meet learning objectives.
4. List at least 3 potential "pitfalls" in implementing TBL and how to overcome them.
5. Define the TBL process and mechanics for building groups into learning teams and to promote high levels of individual preparation and class attendance.
