Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

1. Learn the origin of CRM.
2. Understand the inevitability of human error.
3. Identify the characteristics of a High Reliability Organization (HRO).
4. List three Safety Culture Elements.
5. Discuss the need for team skills, Hardwired Safety ToolsTM and safety systems to promote a positive safety culture, manage error, improve patient safety and enhance quality of care.
6. Discuss how team formation affects outcomes.
7. Describe how CRM creates a paradigm shift from individual to team.
8. Recall characteristics of both a cohesive and non-cohesive team.
9. List five components to creating a cohesive team.
10. Identify customized, standardized teamwork tools.
Communication
1. Discuss barriers to effective communication.
2. Understand techniques to overcome communication barriers.
3. Describe how standardized handoffs improve communication

1. Discuss the concept of Situational Awareness and Shared Mental Model: how to build and maintain it.
2. Identify how teams provide Mutual Support to promote resilience.
3. Describe the four parts of the Crosscheck & Assertion process.
4. Identify indicators of an adverse situation: Red Flags.
5. Explain how to respond appropriately to the presence of Red Flags.
6. Recall the four-step process to communicate a red flag.
7. State the four parts of an assertive statement.
8. Discuss common pitfalls of team decision-making
9. Understand the “Huddle” process.
10. Identify customized, standardized team tools.
Debrief, Hardwired Safety ToolsTM & Course Wrap-up
1. Understand why teams need to debrief.
