Each year the FDA approves 50 or so novel drugs. In addition, the FDA also approves hundreds of generic medications, biosimilars and adds additional formulations and indications to existing drugs. In total the FDA issues over a thousand approvals each year. For most new medications, there can be a 3–5-year delay before clinicians broadly adopt them in clinical practice.
