Description

Although ethical and professional behaviors are extremely difficult to measure, our goal in this conference is to improve participants' knowledge about basic principles of medical ethics, the definition of, and methods of teaching and remediating, professionalism, and the application of professional behavior and ethical practice to clinical medicine and research. Practice gaps indentifed include, but are not limited to:

1. How is professionalism defined, and what are the controversies surrounding its definition?
2. How does professional behavior impact medical ethics, and how does medical ethics impact the concept of professionalism?
3. What are the challenges of professionalism education and remediation in medical education?
4. How does professional behavior effect clinical outcomes/medical practice?
5. What is the latest empirical data on physician assisted suicide and euthanasia in the US and in Europe, and how does it effect the ethical practice of medicine?
6. What are the  best practices for conflict mediation in the clinical setting?
7. What are crucial ethical issues in medical research, and how do they effect clinical practice?

Objectives

At the end of this activity, learners will be able to:

Identify the controversies surrounding the definition, teaching, and remediation of professionalism, and the impact on clinical practice and medical education.

Describe the empirical data on physician assisted suicide and ethically analyze it, articulating arguments in favor of, and against the practice.

Identify the historical roots of pediatric euthanasia in Europe, and trace these developments through contemporary ethical controversies with pediatric euthanasia today.

Contrast the role of conscientious objection and civil disobedience in the realm of medicine.

Articulate reasons for and against professional organizations sanctioning conscientious objection.

Recognize the history and complexity of professionalism in medicine and how plualism impacts these.
