Objectives
- Define polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and highlight its heterogeneous and complicated presentation
- Review case studies to highlight ways to improve the recognition and diagnosis of PCOS
- Employ the mechanism of hormone management in PCOS and strategies for the use of hormone therapy for cycle control
- Identify evidence-based approaches to hirsutism, dermatologic changes and hair loss in the context of PCOS
- Recall the strong association between PCOS with metabolic syndrome and review cardiovascular risk evaluation and mitigation
- Describe the role of wellness in both the provider and the patient and create strategies to maximize the success of that partnership
- Illustrate the approach to diet and nutrition for weight loss, and develop strategies to overcome barriers to success
- Review current pharmacologic options for medical weight loss, and consider the best approach in the context of metabolic syndrome and PCOS
- Evaluate the definition of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and recognize when and how to evaluate and refer
- Introduce the concept of body positivity, and review the impact of provider approach to this concept on successful management and improved health outcomes
- Define the current standard-of-care expectations in regards to reproductive and fertility issues in the context of PCOS
- Illustrate the current knowledge of the gut microbiome and its role in metabolic syndrome and PCOS; current understanding and future directions
