Description
Fewer than half of mental health professionals received training in empirically supported methods for suicide risk assessment and treatment while in graduate or medical school. Through a combination of presentations and skills focused workshops, this conference is designed to increase knowledge and behavioral competence specific to empirically supported strategies for suicide prevention including suicide risk assessment, crisis response planning, and lethal means counseling. The conference also includes content specific to multiple high-risk subgroups within the community.

Objectives
1. Develop a written crisis response plan to reduce acute suicide risk.
2. Apply the five steps of the MHFA ALGEE to non-crisis and crisis situations where a person shows early and worsening signs of a mental health challenge.
3. Discuss the clinical, research, and policy implications of findings and directions in suicide prevention.
4. Identify how problem gambling contributes to emotional distress, financial hardship, and social isolation, increasing the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
5. Discuss the challenges, successes, and key considerations for building a comprehensive suicide prevention program within a university setting.
6. Identify opportunities to enhance lethal means counseling by addressing cognitive vulnerabilities as a social determinant of suicide prevention.
