Description

The OSU ECMO Symposium 2026 will deliver a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program focused on the latest advances in extracorporeal life support. Content will include evidence-based clinical updates on patient selection and management for both VA and VV ECMO, cutting-edge hands-on simulation session to enhance procedural and crisis-resource management skills, practical workshop on difficult patient management, and program development. The symposium will integrate expert panel discussions, institutional guidance, and interactive case reviews to support clinicians in critical care, anesthesiology, surgery, perfusion, and allied specialties in optimizing outcomes for patients requiring extracorporeal support.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this continuing medical education activity participants should be able to:

1. Apply evidence-based principles for patient selection, cannulation strategies, and management of VV and VA ECMO across cardiothoracic, medical, and surgical critical care populations.
2. Optimize ventilator and sedation strategies during ECMO to minimize ventilator-induced lung injury, promote lung recovery, and support neurologic protection.
3. Identify and manage common and high-risk ECMO complications, including recirculation, differential hypoxemia, bleeding, thrombosis, and low cardiac output states.
4. Integrate advanced monitoring technologies, hemodynamic monitoring, and gas exchange metrics, into bedside ECMO decision-making.
5. Demonstrate improved procedural and crisis management skills through high-fidelity ECMO simulation scenarios, including cannulation emergencies, circuit failure, and multidisciplinary team communication.
6. Evaluate institutional protocols and systems-based approaches to ECMO delivery, ICU workflows, and interprofessional collaboration.
7. Translate emerging research and innovations in extracorporeal life support into practical, real-world clinical practice.
8. Enhance multidisciplinary collaboration among physicians, perfusionists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and advanced practice providers to improve patient outcomes.
