Description
At the time of this program there is a trend in the Neurosurgery specialty incorporating point of care post-operative ultrasound imaging of the brain. This clinical practice change has arisen from the adoption of sonolucent cranioplasty technology. This imaging is being performed at the bedside by clinicians including Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). Based on interactions with APPs and Physicians through the Congress of Neurologic Surgeons, American Society of Neuroradiology, and Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education there is growing awareness of the professional practice gap regarding the ultrasound process.
There is a knowledge gap of functions and uses of ultrasound equipment. Additionally, there is a gap in competence within the neurosurgical applications of ultrasound. The knowledge gap is caused by the lack of awareness of this technology and lack of prior education. The competency gap is due to the lack of education and lack of prior clinical experience using ultrasound in neurosurgical populations.
This educational offering will address both the knowledge and competence by providing an in-person didactic experience through engaging lectures and hands-on skill practice to neurosurgical clinicians including surgeons, Residents, and APPs. This course blends foundational ultrasound education, case discussion, ultrasound imaging review, hands-on skills lab with phantom models and live patients, as well as foster collaboration across the region and specialties through open Q&A and networking to advance neuroimaging and post-operative monitoring skills.
