Connor Senn Symposium: Sudden Cardiac Arrest in the Athlete

December 11th, 2026

Conference starts in:

The Ohio State University - Columbus, OH
1 Day Conference December 11th, 2026
7.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit Hours

Description

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in athletes is rare but life‑threatening, typically occurring without warning during intense physical activity. It is most often caused by underlying heart conditions—many of which produce no symptoms until the moment of collapse.  While SCA is rare, its impact is profound: 1–3 per 100,000 young athletes experience sudden cardiac death during exercise; male athletes are affected up to 10 times more often than females; higher‑risk sports include basketball, football, soccer, hockey, and cross‑country running. This continuing medical education activity provides guidelines for those caring for athletes on the causes of sudden cardiac arrest, the screening of athletes, on an emergency plan once a sudden cardiac arrest occurs, on when, if at all, an athlete can return to play.  Primary prevention includes pre‑participation cardiovascular screening, use of electrocardiograms to detect hidden conditions, and expert interpretation and follow‑up care.  Secondary prevention includes emergency action plans at all athletic venues, readily accessible AEDs, and trained staff who can recognize SCA and respond immediately.
