Description
Advancing Care for Obesity and Its Comorbidities: A significant professional practice gap exists between current clinical management of obesity and its comorbidities and the application of comprehensive, outcomes-focused care. Clinicians often treat obesity related conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, liver diseases, and osteoarthritis in isolation rather than addressing obesity as the underlying, modifiable driver. There is an inconsistent use of the full spectrum of effective therapies, including pharmacologic agents, bariatric surgery, and emerging endoscopic interventions. Additionally, gaps persist in early identification of high-risk patients, appropriate screening and staging, optimization of treatment timing, and coordination of multidisciplinary care. Providers also face challenges with access, coverage, and confidence in shared decision-making, resulting in delayed referrals and underutilization of therapies shown to improve outcomes.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:
1. Describe the relationships between obesity and major comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease, liver diseases, osteoarthritis, and type 2 diabetes.
2. Identify medical, surgical, and endoscopic treatment options for obesity and their impact on obesity-related comorbidities and long-term patient outcomes.
3. Apply current guidelines and patient selection criteria to determine appropriate obesity treatment strategies and referral pathways for multidisciplinary care.
4. Compare the benefits, risks, and effectiveness of pharmacologic and surgical interventions for obesity management and comorbidity reduction.
5. Demonstrate strategies for shared decision-making and patient-centered communication to support individualized obesity treatment planning and improve clinical outcomes.
