About the Speaker:

Dr. Beate Diehl is a neurologist and neurophysiologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London and a Professor of Neurophysiology applied to epilepsy at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology.

She graduated from Heidelberg Medical School and trained in Neurology in Germany before completing subspecialty training in Clinical Neurophysiology and Epilepsy at the Cleveland Clinic. Beate is also certified as a neurologist in the USA and is a Diplomate of the American Boards of Psychiatry and Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology. She held a faculty position at the Cleveland Clinic Epilepsy Center until 2008, when she joined UCL and the National Hospital.

Her clinical focus is presurgical evaluation of medication-resistant epilepsy, particularly using intracranial EEG to localize epileptogenic zones and cortical functions. Her research explores advanced imaging and neurophysiological methods to map epileptogenic networks, study cortical functions, and investigate brain connectivity through direct stimulation. She leads research on autonomic and imaging biomarkers of SUDEP, the effects of high temperatures on epilepsy, and supervises PhD students.

Dr. Diehl teaches on the ILAE VIREPA course, is an invited speaker at national and international meetings, and serves on the ILAE SUDEP Task Force. She has published over 190 peer-reviewed articles (51 as first or senior author); her H-index is 54 (39 since 2020).
