Description

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, the purpose of a preoperative evaluation is not to "clear" patients for elective surgery, but rather to evaluate and, if necessary, implement measures to prepare higher risk patients for surgery.

Objectives

Upon completion of this educational actvity, the participant will be able to: 1.) Provide an overview of the current guidelines for pre-operative cardiovascular exam. 2.) Recognize the indications for cardiovascular testing prior to surgery. 3.) Describe the known risk factors for post-operative pulmonary complications. 4.) Discuss strategies for risk factor assessment in the pre-operative evaluation.
