NOTE: Currently this continuing medical education activity is planned as a live, in-person meeting.  

The Ohio State University’s commitment to following safe and healthy protocols has worked to slow the spread of COVID-19 on our campuses. This continuing medical education activity will address patient candidates for left atrial appendage occlusion devices. Discussion will include strategies for new device implant, and reduction of co-morbidities and outcomes.  New technology will be discussed and will include the opportunity to observe live implantation surgeries.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this continuing medical education activity participants should be able to: 

1. Review clinical data for left atrial appendage occlusion device. 
2. Identify patient selection criteria for left atrial appendage occlusion device. 
3. Review implantation steps for the left atrial appendage occlusion device. 
4. Describe the importance of pre-procedure cardiac CT in understanding anatomy, transseptal access and the size of left atrial appendage occlusion device. 
5. Experience hands-on training pig heart dissection or animal lab to introduce practical training of implantation of left atrial appendage device. 
6. Identify post left atrial appendage occlusion device implant oral anticoagulation treatment and TEE follow-up. 
7. Discuss current and upcoming clinical trials. 
8. Review new device technologies. 
9. Identify optimal transseptal puncture location during LAA occlusion device procedure.
