Description

Dr. Matthew Martinez is the director of Sports Cardiology and Director of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy program at Morristown Medical Center/Atlantic Health System in New Jersey. He regularly presents on Sports Cardiology and Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy at national and international meetings and served as the American College of Cardiology’s Chair of Sports and Exercise section until 2020. He has been an author of many publication on HCM and Athletes including the 2020 ACC/AHA guidelines for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and is the Chair of ACC online “LEARNHCM” platform to educate clinicians caring for HCM patients. Dr. Martinez serves as a cardiology consultant for elite and professional athletes including acting as the League cardiologist for Major League Soccer, team cardiologist for the New York Jets and cardiac consultant for the NFL and NHL. He has also served as the educational program chairman for the international Athletic Heart Symposium on management of athletes with cardiovascular risk.

Objectives

  1. Understand the physiological adaptations that occur in an athlete's heart and how they differ from those of non-athletes.
  2. Recognize common cardiovascular conditions that increase risk in athletes.
  3. Understand shared decision making in athletes who have known or perceived risk for SCA.
  4. Develop a strategy for return to play in those with risk for SCA
