About the Speaker:
Laura Piccio is a physician scientist known internationally for her work in the field of neuroimmunology and neuroinflammation. She obtained her medical degree and PhD at the University of Milan, Italy, where she also trained as a neurologist. In 2005 she was awarded a fellowship by the National MS Society (NMSS) and she moved to the US to work in the Neuroimmunology division under the supervision of Dr. Anne H. Cross at Washington University in St. Louis where she stayed on faculty until 2019. In February 2019 she was appointed at the University of Sydney as an Associate Professor. During her career Laura Piccio was the recipient of several awards. She was named a Harry Weaver Neuroscience Scholar of the NMSS in 2010, a very prestigious 5-year career development award given to selected scientists at the beginning of their careers. In 2011, she was named a Dana Neuroscience Scholar.
The overarching scope of her research is to dissect inflammatory, immune-mediated and neurodegenerative mechanisms implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS) and Alzheimer disease. Her goals are to identify potential new avenues for therapeutic intervention or disease prevention. Specific areas of research interests in Laura Piccio’s laboratory are: (i) the study of microglial biology and the innate immune receptor TREM2 (which is expressed by microglia) in the context of CNS neurodegeneration, demyelination and remyelination; and (ii) the study of the complex interplay between nutrition, metabolism and immune inflammatory responses in MS; (iii) the identification of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or blood biomarkers to provide information on MS disease prognosis and guide treatment choices. A common theme of Laura Piccio’s research is to quickly take laboratory-based research findings into the clinical setting.
