Description
This inaugural annual education day will be a half-day conference featuring two tracks (clinical, community) designed to strengthen sickle cell disease (SCD)-specific knowledge while increasing awareness of care needs and community resources.
Insufficient healthcare provider education is on the most consistently identified contributors to poor outcomes in people living with SCD (pwSCD). National survey data demonstrate substantial gaps in provider knowledge related to evidence-based pain management, preventative care, adult SCD management, and awareness of newer therapies. Additionally, these knowledge gaps exist across disciplines and care settings—including but not limited to outpatient centers, inpatient units, and emergency departments. Previous studies demonstrated that pwSCD experience disproportionately high rates of ED visits and hospital readmissions, often related to delayed analgesia, inconsistent pain reassessment, and lack of adherence to evidence based protocols. Our internal data is consistent with these outcomes—revealing that the classical hematology inpatient service remains the service with the highest readmission rate, and is even higher when looking specifically at readmissions to this service by pwSCD.
This conference therefore seeks to reduce knowledge gaps amongst all possible members of a pwSCD’s care team. Given the underrepresentation of classical hematology within undergraduate, graduate and training programs, we hope to provide an opportunity for dedicated education, engagement, collaboration and teambuilding amongst providers and community members within the multi-latitudinal and multi-longitudinal continuums of SCD care. In fact, educational interventions have been shown to significantly improve provider attitudes, reduce stigma, increase adherence to guidelines, and support sustained practice change. Furthermore, by hosting this educational conference annually, we hope to produce a sustainable response to the 2024 Ohio Department of Health call for explicit
progressional education and awareness initiatives to improve care delivery in SCD, which was recognized as a public health priority.
