Objectives

-To discuss the historical context of racism in psychiatry (including the justification for slavery to the eventual support for the Eugenics Movement).
-To discuss racism in medical education and the continued exclusion of African-Americans.
-To discuss the reconceptualization of African-Americans and the sources of their perceived deficits post-civil rights movement.
-To discuss the racism inherent in psychiatric diagnoses and treatment of the African-American patient population.
-To discuss psychoanalytic perspectives on racism and reconsideration of the physician/patient dynamic along with diagnostic conceptualization given these reconsiderations.
-Strategies for confronting racial violence in real time.
-Recommendations for improving medical education considering this history.
