Objectives

-Examine the relationships between insomnia and inflammation in the pathophysiology of late life depression , and inform how insomnia and inflammation increase the risk of depression and what biological and clinical factors contribute to heterogeneity of risk.
- Evaluate how insomnia and inflammation act together in a “two-hit” model to potentiate affective mechanisms of late life depression through differential gene expression, and thereby inform clinicians about the elevated risk of depression in response to inflammatory exposure in older adults with insomnia.
-Demonstrate that late life depression can be effectively prevented by targeting insomnia, and provide clinicians with ready tools to screen for insomnia and treat insomnia to reduce the likelihood of depression.
